An outreach day took place on December 20, 2008, just in time for the holidays at City of Refuge, an Atlanta-based organization that provides a variety of services to families in need, such as food, clothing, shelter, job training, and transportation. Dentist volunteers and students from Georgia Institute of Technology's Pre-Dental Society came together for free dental screenings for all patients and and cleanings and sealants for children. A total of 41 patients were treated, including 29 children, 20 of whom received sealants.
Patients with urgent needs were given information on free or low-cost area dental clinics, and all patients left with gift bags containing toothpaste, floss, a toothbrush, and oral hygiene instructions.
"You don't need to travel around the world to help people; it's nice to make a local connection and help someone who could be your neighbor."
~ Shannon Fatehi, first year dental student at Medical College of Georgia
